Growth and yield of wheat varieties as influenced by various stages of green forage harvest.

Field experiments were conducted in Izatnagar, India, to determine the effects of different harvesting dates (60 and 70 days after sowing) on grain yield and yield attributes (plant height, tillers per plant, ear length, grains per ear, 100-seed weight and straw and grain yield) of the wheat cultivars UP 2003, UP 2338 and WH 542. Results showed that The yield and yield attributes of UP 2003 increased significantly as compared to the other 2 cultivars irrespective of harvesting date. The 100-seed weight, ear length and grains per ear were significantly higher in all 3 cultivars at the 60 days after sowing (DAS) than the 70 DAS harvest. Although the grain yield was statistically at par in both 60 and 70 DAS harvests, the fodder yield increased by 20% on a dry matter basis at the 70 DAS harvest compared to the 60 DAS harvest.
