VARIABILITY FOR QUALITY TRAITS IN FORAGE ALFALFA (MEDICAGO SATIVA L.)

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), is one of the important forage legumes. The fodder is rich in protein, highly palatable and a good milk multiplier in milch animals. The crop is widely accepted for cultivation in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions of India. The fodder production potential of alfalfa ranks in the elite group amongst perennial forage legumes. Keeping the importance of the species in view, breeding for quality traits becomes an important aspect of varietal improvement programme.
