SILAGE QUALITY OF DIFFERENT FORAGES ENSILED IN PLASTIC BAGS

To overcome the difficulties of traditional silos, an endeavor was made to evaluate the small plastic bag (35 Kg capacity) as silo material for ensiling pearl millet, fodder sorghum, maize and natural grass. From organo-leptic point all the silages emitted sweet aroma of lactic acid except natural grass. Butyrate was completely absent in silages made from pearl millet and sorghum fodder. The quantity of lactic acid was very low in grass silage due to non-availability of readily available soluble carbohydrates while the concentration of the same substrate was higher in rest of the three forages to ensure ensiling reaction at desired levels. As evident from Flieg index, the silage made from fodder sorghum was best Silage quality was unaffected by siiomaterial and therefore, plastic bag can be used for ensiling above forage crops.
