Effect of cutting thickness on the rooting and shoot growth of selected clones of Populus ciliata was examined in a nursery trial during 1999 and 2000. Sprouting, rooting, seasonal growth and survival increased with the increasing thickness of cuttings. The cuttings of 20-25mm thickness produced significantly higher number of secondary and tertiary roots. The cuttings of 15-20 mm thickness recorded maximum shoot growth. However, shoot emergence and time taken for sprouting decreased with the increase in size of cutting. The clone Nagni with 15-20 mm thickness showed maximum shoot height (236cm). While the clone Narkanda with 10-15 mm thickness recorded the maximum rate of emergence (3.78) and the same clone with 20-25 mm diameter produced maximum secondary and tertiary roots.
