Sustainable agriculture in North-Eastern Hill region

摘要

Natural resources degradation, shrinking forest cover and loss of biodiversity are the issues of greatest concern for sustainable development of agriculture in the North-Eastern Hill (NEH) region. Continued deforestation has resulted into serious soil erosion, decline in land productivity, silting of natural water bodies, occurrence of flash-floods and drying of perennial water sources. Soil and water conservation strategies involving indigenous farming systems, mechanical measures, agronomic measures, alternate land use systems, water harvesting and recycling, integrated watershed management are highlighted in this paper.
