Field experiments were conducted during 2005-06 and 2006-07 at the National Research Centre for Agroforestry, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, India, to investigate the influence of canopy pruning on fine and small root biomass of Albizia procera under agroforestry system. Higher root biomass was recorded during kharif (rainy season) as compared to rabi (winter season) cropping. Fine root biomass was highest in upper 0-15 cm soil layer but the small roots were higher in 15-30 cm soil depth. Among the pruning regimes, control (unpruned trees) had significantly (P=0.05) higher root biomass than 50 and 70% canopy pruning. In unpruned trees, fine and small root biomass was 40 and 155% higher than 70% canopy pruning, respectively.
