Fodder marketing and trends of credit interlocking systems of goat farming in peri-urban areas of Kolkata and Dantewara: a critical analysis.

This study was conducted to: (i) examine the marketing channels of green fodders; (ii) evaluate price spread of green fodders; and (iii) examine the credit interlocking patterns in the study areas. Data were gathered by interviewing a total of 300 producers, village traders/retailers, commission agents and consumers/buyers from peri-urban areas of West Bengal and Chhattisgarh, India. In both areas, the common channel for marketing of jackfruit, green and other leaves was commission agent-village traders-end consumers. The price spreads of leaves and green grasses were quite high in both areas. The interlocking arrangements between credit borrower and lender exists, in both areas. The resource poor goat farmers, undergo for the interlocking system as they cannot fulfil their basic needs, from goat rearing, cultivation or from off-farm incomes. Considering the unemployment situation, it is necessary to start micro-credit system through self-help groups for the marginal farmers and landless labourers, which may break credit interlocking arrangement. Further, some agribusiness may also be organized through cooperatives to address unemployment problems.
