Productivity of forage sorghum as influenced by tillage and soil moisture conservation practices in sorghum-gram cropping system.

A field experiment was conducted in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, India during 2000-2001-2002/2003 to assess the effect of three levels of tillage and seven moisture conservation practices using the foliage of Leucaena leucocephala for mulching as per treatments on sorghum. The treatments included combinations of: three levels of tillage in vertical row (zero tillage (ZT), three harrowing in each season (H) and one deep summer ploughing (DSP)), followed by two harrowing in each season; and seven moisture conservation practices in horizontal rows (control, foliage mulch (FM) at 5 tonnes/ha, FM at 7.5 tonnes/ha, jalshakti at 2.5 kg/ha, jalshakti at 5 kg/ha, FM at 5 tonnes/ha + jalshakti at 5 kg/ha, and FM at 7.5 tonnes/ha + jalshakti at 2.5 kg/ha). Maximum dry matter yield and crude protein yield of sorghum was evident after treatments with 7.5 tonnes FYM/ha ad 2.5 kg jalshakti/ha, while maximum green fodder yield was maximum in the 7.5 tonnes/ha FYM treatment. Meanwhile, the control treatment gave lower values.
