A field experiment was conducted for four years (1994-98) at Tegur farm of IGFRI Regional Research Station, Dharwad (Karnataka) to identify suitable silvo-pastoral system for marginal and wastelands with a view to improve forage productivity. The experiment was conducted on a coarse gravelley soil with 1.0 -1.3 % organic carbon having neutral reaction and low available P and K contents. The treatments comprising all combination of two fodder trees (Hardwickia binata Roxb., Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit. alongwith control (no tree) and 5 pastoral mixtures (Trispecific napier hybrid (PTH)+ Stylosanthus scabra, Bracharia decumbense (B.d)+ Stylosanthus scabra, Pennisetum pedicellatum (Rp) + Stylosanthes scabra , Cenchrus ciliaris (C.c) + Stylosanthes scabra and sole Stylosanthes scabra (S.s) were compared in a randomised block design with two replicates Two year old fodder tree saplings were planted during October 1994 at 5 m X 3 m spacing. Each tree was planted in a 60 m X 10 m strip per replication and thus there were three strips of trees/replication. Each fodder tree strip was devided into five equal parts of 12 m X 10 m and pastoral treatments were imposed and thus there were 8 trees / plot. The fodder tree plantation was done under rainfed condition.
