2006 Aluminum Extrusion Design Competition Displays Student Innovation

The Extrusion Technology for Aluminum Profiles Foundation (ET Foundation) announced the winning entries from the 2006 International Aluminum Extrusion Design Competition. Open to professional engineers, designers, manufacturers, and students, the competition in recent years has been marked by some outstanding student entries. Building on that trend, this year featured a first for the history of the competition: the Grand Prize across all categories, with a cash prize of 5,000 dollars, was awarded to a student entry of a Sea-Craft Rescue Bed (Figure 1). Other winners amongst the almost 75 entries included a sheet metal hand brake, a leg used in office partitions, an automatic transmission cooler, a modular trellis system, and a foundation for refugee housing.
