Impol d.d. of Slovenia produces more than 100,000 tons of rolled and extruded products of aluminum and aluminum alloys at its plant in Slovenska Bistrica (Figure 1). Founded in 1825 as an industrial plant for copper products, Impol switched its production in the 1950s to the fabrication of aluminum. The company originally installed a hot and cold rolling mill in the late 1960s and three extrusion presses in the 1960s and 70s, one press in the 90s, and a fifth press in 2000. Impol exports its products all over the world, including Germany, Italy, the U.S., Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Australia, with a combined (rolled and extruded products) yearly turnover of more than 200 million US dollars. The focus of this article is on Impol's rolled production, which includes aluminum strip and sheet, tread plate, and embossing plate as well as foil products (converter/technical, container, and household foils).
