Norandal Six High Mill Upgrade

In September 2003, Industrial Automation Services (IAS) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, successfully completed a multiphase project for the Norandal six high cold mill in Huntingdon, Tennessee. This project identified opportunities and implemented automation and equipment solutions, which cost-effectively improved the productivity of the mill. This article describes the project scope with specific technical detail on the key elements responsible for productivity improvements. Throughput improvements of 41 percent with increased product quality and yield are discussed. The goal of this project was to achieve sustainable maximum mill design speed and throughput while maintaining acceptable guaranteed gauge and shape performance.
