SmartView 4.0 is the latest software release for the SmartView Metals surface inspection system offered by Cognex of Natick, Massachusetts, for state-of-the-art detection, identification, and visualization of defects in aluminum sheet processing. It can be used in hot mills, cold mills, and foil mills, and on leveling lines, coating lines, and inspection lines. The system allows mill operators to catch defects before shipping, can eliminate customer quality claims, reduce scrap, ensure quality, reduce overall operational costs, and enhance process control. A typical inspection system for an aluminum mill would consist of two digital line scan cameras with sensors for scanning 100 percent of the surface of each side of the aluminum sheet. The cameras send digital snapshots of the entire width of the strip to a system server where the SmartView software automatically identifies and classifies defects. This data can be made available to additional computers in the plant, to an operator station, or inspection viewers in an open computer network. Another server can also be dedicated to archiving all historical data from strip runs. A preloaded defect library comes with a new system. The library can easily be expanded and fine tuned to a production site. The new 4.0 software is backward compatible with all prior SmartView systems.
