Saws are critical elements in the efficient production of aluminum billet, during its subsequent extrusion into lineal shapes and in dividing the extruded shapes into the lengths required by the customer. In the casthouse, circular saws or handsaws are used to cut cast log into the lengths required by their customers in the extrusion industry. Since handsaws, with their narrow kerf, inherently produce less low-grade scrap in the form of saw chips, they are favored by high volume billet producers. In extrusion operations, circular saws predominate. There they are used to cut the cast log into billet prior to the extrusion process, and to cut extrusions into multiples of the lengths required by the customer on the leadout table or as it moves along the runout table, before being transferred to the cooling table. Another saw is used on the cooling table to cut samples for measurement and testing before the extrusions are finally cut into the lengths required by the customer at the finish cut saw.
