Given the great interest shown today in high temperature, creep resistant magnesium alloys, this book on rare earth (RE)-containing magnesium alloys by L. L. Rokhlin (Baikov Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science, Moscow, Russia) published in 2003 couldn't be more timely. Rare earth metals represent a group of 17 elements usually associated with period six of the periodic table (at. nos. 57-71) with yttrium (at. no. 39) and scandium (at. no. 21) noted separately. Their use in alloying magnesium arose after WWII, initially with mischmetal as the main alloy addition. As Rokhlin notes, magnesium alloys with separate rare earth elements have properties that surpass those of the early Mg-RE alloys made with mischmetal.
