Timber supply research: how much harvesting can regional forest resources sustain?

A brief description is given of STRIPS (the southern timber resource inventory projection system), a computer model for predicting future timber supplies at the local and regional levels. The model was used to predict pine (Pinus spp.) inventory, growth and removal in Louisiana from 1991 to 2010, and to project inventories of the major species groups (pine, broadleaves and cypress [Taxodium distichum]) to 2010. All projections show a steady decline in the inventory except that for cypress.
