For the principal production system of the Louisiana beef industry—the cow-calf system—perennial summer grass pastures form the typical environment in which it must perform. While many factors influence the profitability of this system, pounds of calf sold at weaning have a major impact on annual revenues. The single most important factor influencing weaning weight is the lactational performance of the dam. About 60 percent of the total variation in 205-day (weaning) weights has been attributed tothe independent effects of the dam's milk yield.
