Field studies were conducted in Louisiana on the sorghum midge (Stenodiplosis sorghicola). The results showed that the commercially available sorghum hybrid DeKalb DK60 was resistant under northeast Louisiana conditions. The economic threshold levelof 5 midge per sorghum head, developed for resistant hybrids, was not exceeded until much later in the growing season, compared to the economic threshold level of 1 midge per head for susceptible hybrids. This delayed or eliminated the need to apply insecticides to control S. sorghicola resistant to the hybrid. Yields for the resistant hybrid, in the absence of insecticides, were comparable to those for the susceptible hybrid treated with insecticide to control S. sorghicola. It was concluded that plant resistance to S. sorghicola has potential as an integrated pest management tool in Louisiana.
