摘要

Friction stir welding produces weldments of good microstructure and mechanical properties in a very wide range of metals. The development of special welding tools has allowed the production of excellent welds at low energy levels. It has been found that as welded, the microstructure of the nugget is comprised of thermo-mechanically recrystallized grains. In transformable metals, the heat affected zone and weld nugget region can contain transformed martensitic or bainitic microstructures due to the frictional heating required to form the joint.However, further developments of both tooling and process are required to maximize the potential of FSW and allow the welding of complex joints and sections.
