The use of aluminum and magnesium in the automobile industry has increased significantly over the past 20 years and is poised for further growth with the increasing emphasis on vehicle fuel economy. The use of these materials has been enabled by improvements in material properties, design, material cost, and manufacturing processes. This paper will review aluminum and magnesium use in the automotive industry and describe emerging technologies that should enable their increased use over the next decade.
