We propose an elevator brake system located directly at the car. We will compare today's machine brake with the car brake on component and system level, and discuss an integrated elevator brake which combines car brake and safety catch functionality. Different concepts which include various actuating mechanisms are presented. The car brake system has the potential to be the basis technology for future elevators, which may incorporate for example alternative traction concepts. We discuss the system benefits of the integrated elevator brake in detail, before we conclude the paper by showing some results of a realized test system.
