ISO TC 178 is the technical committee dealing with lifts (elevators) escalators and moving walks. The technical committee was shaped in 1980 as an autonomous technical committee while the ISO standardisation works for lifts started before in the 50's in the frame of another Technical Committee (TC 59) covering various other topics. The lift industry has been living for a long time with a strong tradition of standardisation which started by the harmonisation of technical dimensions (hoistway and car dimensions) and technical characteristics (nominal load, speed using the famous Renard serial). This approach allowed the industry to produce and install the first "models" for the beginning of the 70's in the context of a building construction industry which was not very much standardisation oriented.
