During elevator operation the starting phase for each cycle is the acceleration of the drive sheave from zero to rated rotation speed. The braking process comprises deceleration from rated speed to zero. Both the rotational speed itself and the angular acceleration are driven by the motor. If, however, the electrical supply should fail, then an additional mechanical braking device will have to be activated to ensure that the system will continue to be stationary.
