Who trains the trainers? Safety-related conferences not hitting home with resident safety guru

Over the past six years, my day to day duties and responsibilities around the office have caused the amount of time I actually spend in the field to dwindle. As the song goes, I "don't get around much anymore," at least not for the same reasons. When I leave the office these days it's usually to attend trade shows, conferences, and any number of industry related goings-on. I usually enjoy attending these events and meeting all the players in the safety biz but I have been noticing a disturbing trend in recent years and that is that more and more, many of the safety "professionals" in the arena have no real practical experience within the industry they profess to be an "expert" in. This state of disconnection between safety for the real world and the rhetorical, useless information being spouted by some of these self-proclaimed "experts" is alarming.
