It is said there are two types of Doitsu-goi, Leather Carp (kawa-goi) produced in Austria in 1782, followed by Mirror Carp (kagami-goi) in 1798. Doitsu-goi was first imported into Japan in 1904.Shusui was the oldest Doitsu-type Nishikigoi. It is said that in 1912 Kichigoro Akiyama, a researcher at the Tokyo Fisheries College, crossbred a Doitsu-goi with an Asagi Sanshoku (called as Sanshu-koi) to produce a new variety of Nishikigoi which wouldbe called as Shusui. Its beautiful name has an episode: Those new koi drew all eyes in particular by the beautiful clear blue color on the smooth scale-less body. In 1910 Shinnosuke Matsubara hit upon the name "Shusui" meaning autumnal water-blue after the family name of its breeder Akiyama.
