Nickel and sustainable development

IN 1987, THE UNITED NATION'S WORLD COMMISSION ON ENVIRONment and Development, chaired by Norway's then-prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, optimistically foresaw "the possibility for a new era of economic growth, one based on policies that sustain and expand the environment resource base."In their final report Our Common Future the commission served notice that "the time has come to take the decisions needed to secure the resources to sustain this and coming generations."Although the commission did not offer a detailed blueprint for action, it did point the way toward an approach which it called "sustainable development."
