Despite incredible advancements in science and technology, the pace and intensity of global chal- lenges have continued to escalate. Emerging dis- eases, increased drought, safety and availability of food, water quality, and environmental degra- dation respect no borders and create competition for natural resources that can only be addressed through collaboration and broad engagement of the international community. The expertise re- quired to address these problems will increas- ingly draw on innovations across a variety ofscientific, medical, and technological sources.Scientific societies, university networks, and non- governmental organizations, with missions to educate, share knowledge, collaborate, and im- prove the human condition through science,have an increasingly important role to play in this arena. As the oldest and largest society of lifes cientists, ASM's member network is poised to make significant contributions through outreach and training of local and regional collaborators.Here we present an overview of the emerging topic of science diplomacy and offer a strategy for future Society engagement with international efforts to facilitate sustainable development.
