West Virginia state officials are reporting a rise in the number of drilling permits, with the majority being for projects in the Marcellus Shale.

According to state records, of the more than 1,400 permits West Virginia's Office of Oil and Gas has received and processed since Jan. 1., 70% have been for wells that target the Marcellus. For the two weeks that ended Mar. 26, Pennsylvania state officials reported 52 permits for the Marcellus were filed, compared with 25 in West Virginia.
