US electricity demand last week was 5.7% higher than the same week a year ago, according to the Edison Electric Institute

Americans used 84,813 gigawatt-hours of electricity in the week ended Dec. 18, about 3.3% more than the previous week. Six out of the nine regions in the 48 contiguous states posted increases over 2009 in electric output, with the Southeast region posting the largest increase of 17.7%. The biggest decline was in the Pacific Northwest where output fell by 12%. Year to date, power demand is up 3.6%. The EEI's seasonally adjusted weekly electrical index was 10 points higher at 193, relative to last year.
