The Wisconsin Public Service Commission, with a 3-0 vote, has given Alliant Energy's subsidiary Wisconsin Power & Light (WPL) the OK to build a 700-megawatt combined cycle natural gas-fired power plant at its existing Riverside Energy Center in Beloit, Wisconsin

The site is already home to a 675-MW gas-fired plant. WPL has also said it will build a 2-MW, $5 million integrated solar facility at the Riverside plant site. Construction of the new plant is expected to begin in the fall with the plant scheduled to go online in 2020. The public service commission said no to a call by the Wisconsin Industrial Energy Group, a trade association, to place a hard cap of $700 million on the project.
