The US Coast Guard began controlled burns today in an effort to contain and stop a growing oil spill from BP's damaged Mancondo project well on Mississippi Canyon Block 252.

Petty Officer Connie Terrell told Gas Market Reconnaissance that the Unified Area Command -- a group of federal, state and industry officials coordinating efforts to control the well and contain the spill -- has approved the burn. She added that it would be off the coast of Louisiana and the command "was making notifications to industry and government agencies."
