Nature's fireworks: Welcome thistles into your garden and watch an explosion of colour and form. They're a visual delight, and make tasty treat for wildife, says Carol Klein
Perhaps, because I have a nursery, they assume I can grow whatever I like and have no need for gifts. But one year was exceptional, as several friends brought me plant presents -and every single one was prickly. There were biennial thistles and perennial thistles, cardoons and artichokes and even a teasel or two. I didn't take it personally, and each one has found its own special nook. Thistles and thistly plants are a huge boon in the garden right now. When used well they can add real pizazz, turning mediocre plantings into sparkling scenarios. Close up, many have fascinating structures, as well as making architectural statements from further away.
