The reserve is the source of almost half of the nation's helium supply and more than a third of the world's. The reserve consists of about 24 wells about 15 miles northwest of Amarillo. The wells draw the naturally occurring helium from the ground and feeds it into a 450-mile pipeline to Kansas.
