A double-than-expected drop in crude stockpiles was ignored as the focus shifted to the surprising rise in gasoline and distillates stockpiles. Recent weather-related disruptions in the US Gulf of Mexico were credited for much of the inventory drop. The Department of Energy reported that US crude inventories fell 6.7 million barrels, while analysts expected a 3.3 million-barrel decrease.
