In spite of a bearish weekly oil storage report, crude advanced to an intraday high of $71.65 after the Department of Energy showed gains in fuel consumption and orders for durable goods, indicating improvements in the economy. Goods orders rose for the fourth time in five months, suggesting an up tick in US manufacturing. Oil was also supported by climbing equities as the Commerce Department also reported sales of new homes rose to the highest level in two years.
