Developing underused oil crops for oleochemicals

A new, four- to five-year research project, called COSMOS, has begun its investigation into ways of reducing the EU's dependence on imported plant oils, such as palm oil, for oleochemical production, by developing the cultivation and diversified use of non-genetically modified camelina and crambe. The project consortium is headed by Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research, of the Netherlands, and has eighteen partners, half of which come from industry and half from academia.
