Calls to increase vitamin D requirements in hope of reducing breast and colon cancer incidence

A reduction of breast and colon cancer by at least 50% is projected, if the population would heed the call to increase intake of vitamin D. Recent analysis of North American data suggested that vitamin D intakes should be increased to 2000 IU (international units) in order to achieve a 50% reduction in colon cancer incidence. A still higher intake is needed for a 50% reduction in breast cancer. Extrapolations from these data suggest that the daily intake would need to increase to 3500 IU.
