The environment may not be one of the top concerns driving the debate over the 1995 farm bill, but it remains critically important to agriculture. More than any other industry, farmers interact intimately with nature every time they report for work. Their decisions affect the earth's productivity and integrity. Their livelihoods depend on both. The environment also links U.S. agriculture in a fundamental way to the world. Good environmental stewardship is essential to sustain the productivity neededto feed a growing population. It also sets an important example.
