Researchers are concentrating more and more on finding alternatives to fossil fuels in order to combat climate change and oil shortages. One solution could be found in enzymes and microorganisms, which produce bioethanol from waste straw. Biotechnologists, chemists and process engineers at Linde and Sud-Chemie are working together to develop an energy-efficient process for the production of bioethanol. This does not compete with foodstuffs and boasts an excellent carbon emissions balance sheet.
