Refineries are confronted with a major challenge due to the worldwide, increasing demand for high quality fuels, such as diesel and kerosene, and shrinking markets for heating oil and heavy fuel oil. Consequently, it is an important goal to increase the production of middle distillates and simultaneously reduce the fraction of lower value residues. In terms of technology, chemistry and economics, the admixture of residue oils from atmospheric or vacuum distillation to the crude oil used in FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking) plants is a suitable measure.
