Large-Scale Projects Usher in the Transition to Hydrogen: Gearing Up for the Switch

The first prerequisite for moving toward a hydrogen future is the fundamental decision by policymakers and the auto industry in favor of the new energy source. A reasonable hydrogen infrastructure for automobiles can only be built up through major collaborative projects involving the business community, policymakers, petroleum companies, filling station operators, the gas industry, automakers and transport associations. The various phases in this transition also entail a joint hydrogen roadmap for the enlarged EU. In order to acquire experience for the realization of a sensible infrastructure, TOTAL created the "Hydrogen Competence Center Berlin" in cooperation with the Berliner Verkehrs-betriebe (BVG) and officially opened a hydrogen filling station in October 2002.
