In the context of landscape design, the word sustainable can mean many things. Jim Calkins, a Minneapolis-based landscape design consultant who earned his Ph.D. in horticulture and taught landscape design at the University of Minnesota, uses a multi-faceted definition. To be sustainable, a landscape should be functional, maintainable, environmentally sound, cost effective, and visually or aesthetically pleasing.
