Northern gardeners have been blessed to have a young and successful breeder living right in our backyard, turning out varieties that will perform beautifully in our USDA Zone 3 and 4 gardens. I'm speaking about David Zlesak, currently a professor of horticulture at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls but a graduate of the University of Minnesota. You may know some of David's past introductions, including First Editions~R Little Devil ninebark, Heliopsis 'Tuscan Sun' and a number of hardy shrub roses. David works with all plant groups, and his latest creations, while perennial in the Deep South of the United States, are annuals here. David worked on the new Monarch series Ageratum for more than 10 years, combining a little-known Mexican species with some of the more commonly used Ageratum houstonianum cultivars, such as the Hawaii series.
