RENOVATION OF THE KAUNAS STREET LIGHTING SYSTEM

The major part of Lithuanian town street lighting systems consists of obsolete and out-of-date luminaires. Large amounts of electricity are consumed during their maintenance. Replacement of high pressure mercury lamp luminaires by high pressure sodium lamp luminaires would enable to reduce electric energy consumption about 2 times. Implementation of light flux regulators which reduce street surface illuminance when traffic density is low enables additional reduction of energy consumption (by 30-45%). The quality of luminaires is of great importance. The status of the Kaunas street lighting system and the purposes of its renovation are analysed, also energetic and economic problems are summarized.
