Grow your own: With rich soil and a little study, these home gardeners grow much of their own food on a suburban lot

It's often said, "You can take the kids off the farm, but you can't take the farm out of the kids." Sharon and Ted Pew are clear proof of that adage. On their one-third-acre suburban lot in Belle Plaine, the pair grow hundreds of pounds of fruits andvegetables, maintain an herb bed, and care for Roxanne, their pet chicken who provides eggs daily for the family. Much of the year the Pews, including three almost-grown sons, feed themselves on their own produce, fresh in the warm seasons, and frozen, pickled, and dried in the winter and early spring.
