Rain gardens turn puddles into lush havens for native plants. In the last few years, rain gardens have generated a lot of buzz in gardening cirdes. The concept originated in the early 1990s in Prince Georges County, Md., when Larry Coffman, associatedirector of the couny's Department of Environmental Resources, coined the term. He and has team were trying to develop cost-effective, low-impact development methods and improve infiltraMdtt systems and wateruality in storm water management installations. They dreamed up the idea of filtering storm water through perennial "rain gardens"- areas landscaped with miditowers and other native plants that soak up rain water.
