摘要

Forget about the power of one. The Northfield Remembrance Garden wouldn't have been planted this past summer without the power of many. The garden— a vine-covered pergola over a walkway with grasses and roses planted near a striking boulder at one end of the walk— involved dozens of community members as volunteers and donors. In August, members of the Northfield Garden Club presented the remembrance garden to the city as a gift to mark the city's 150th anniversary. The idea of a remembrance gardenemerged after the deaths two years ago of two long-time garden club members: Millie DeMann and Betsy Maitland. Contributions to the club in memory of the two women, in addition to other memorial funds already on hand, amounted to several thousand dollars. "We had a Memorial Rose Garden," says Molly Woehrlin, project co-chair, "but the roses were not thriving. We were looking for a new site and the idea of a pergola came up."
