This lovely perennial has been selected by the Perennial Plant Association as the Perennial of the Year for 2012, and deservedly so. Introduced in 2000 by Walters Gardens, Inc. in Zeeland, Mich., 'Jack Frost' was discovered as a sport in Walters' tissue-culture lab, a mutation of the cultivar 'Langtrees'. It has been on the market for 11 years and has proven to be an excellent performer in northern gardens, hardy in USDA Zones 3-8. It is the foliage of 'Jack Frost' that is so exceptional. The leavesare large and heart-shaped, and although they are dark green, they have a shimmering silver overlay that allows only the green veining to show through.
