BNP Paribas pays the price for violations

French bank BNP Paribas has agreed to pay almost$9bn to settle charges that it conspired to violate US sanctions laws covering Sudan,Iran and Cuba,engaging in US dollar-based transactions in part to support oil and gas projects. US authorities accuse the bank of moving at least$8.84bn through the US financial system on behalf of sanctioned enti-ties.BNP Paribas on 9 July agreed a guilty plea on conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and the Trading with the Enemy Act over at least 2004-12.
