India cuts CNG, LPG prices ahead of elections

India’s coalition government has cut prices of compressed natural gas (CNG) for motor vehicles by around 30pc and piped natural gas by 20pc ahead of national elections expected in May. It also cut non-subsidised LPG prices by 8.6pc and increased supplies of subsidised LPG cylinders. The Congress party, which lost four key state polls in December last year because of high energy and food prices, appears likely to abandon any planned economic reforms. The government cut CNG prices by 15 rupees/kg (25￠/kg) to Rs35/kg and piped gas to households by Rs5/ m~3 to Rs24.50/m~3 in Delhi, in order to save the environment and reduce pollution levels, oil minister Veerappa Moily says.
